The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella) is the best protection against measles. Children should routinely receive doses at 12-15 months and 4-6 years of age. Special recommendations may apply during outbreaks or for international travel and the vaccine may be available for children as early as 6 months old.
Although measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, outbreaks can still occur when the virus is introduced into communities with lower vaccination rates. Measles spreads easily through coughing and sneezing and can lead to serious complications, particularly for infants, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Vaccination not only protects you and your family, but also helps protect vulnerable members of the community who may be unable to receive certain vaccines.
